California wrestler James Howey shows off the shirts he earned at his first three J Robinson wrestling camps — J Robinson Intensive Wrestling
There is dedication to a plan, and then there is what California prep wrestler James Howey has put himself through during the summer of 2014.
As reported by the Los Angeles Times, Howey has spent the entire summer, from June 4 on, attending the prestigious J. Robinson Intensive Wrestling Camps. The camps, which rotate between sites at different colleges, typically wears out young wrestlers in a single 14 or 28-day session. Howey is attending four straight Robinson camps, and has spent more than $9,000 on them. He raised more than $5,000 toward that total with a self-created GoFundMe site.
Here’s how his summer has played out:
- Travel from Southern California to Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa for 10-day Robinson Camp
- Travel from Forest city to Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pennsylvania for a 14-day Robinson Camp
- Leave Edinboro and travel immediately to St. Paul, Minn. for a 28-day Robinson Camp at the University of Minnesota.
- Travel from the Twin Cities to Ashland, Oregon’s Southern Oregon University for a 14-day Robinson Camp.
This final event will conclude on August 9, meaning that Howey will have been on the go for wrestling for more than two full months. Considering the fact that none of these events are anywhere near his Pomona home, that’s some dedication. Howey won’t get much downtime after the final camp ends, either, with classes starting at his Diamond Ranch High just four days later.
If it all seems too much, Howey insists that he’s happy he has spent the entire summer wrestling.
“[If there was another camp] I’d do it,” he told the Times.
